103 Pounds
1. Raider Lofthouse—Mountain Crest
2. Kade Moss—Bingham
3. Trevor Sweat—Wasatch
4. Bracken Nipko—Weber
5. Mike Winger—Viewmont
6. Tucker Ray—Roy
7. Cody Thornton—South Summit
8. Colby Christensen—Uintah
Notes: Raider Lofthouse pinned everyone at state including tough
rival Tucker Ray of Roy HS. Kade Moss edged Bracken Nipko of Weber
in 5-A. Sandwiched in between is 3-A champ Trevor Sweat who held
off #8 ranked Colby Christensen of Uintah. Mike Winger of Viewmont,
took third but holds two head-to-head wins over Ray. Cody Thornton
won 2-A and is a star in the making! Four of these wrestlers are
freshman and the other four are just sophomores.
1. Keola Goodman—Pleasant Grove
2. Ryker Vandertoolen—Bingham
3. Nate Larsen—Viewmont
4. Zack Reynolds—Uintah
5. Wyatt Ray—Roy
6. Derek Malan—Weber
7. Jed Shannon—Box Elder
8. Colby Barlocker—Enterprise
Notes: A lot of who beat who here, especially in 5-A but Keola
Goodman ended up on top in the end. It was very tough to leave Caleb
Ashworth of Spanish Fork off of this list. He faltered at state
but had two big wins over Goodman this season. The top three go
to 5-A then #4 and #5 are state champs Zack Reynolds and Wyatt Ray,
the former winning his second title. Derek Malan knocked off Viewmont
stud Nate Larsen at region but Larsen got him at state in the third
place match. Ray knocked off fellow Region 5 rival Jed Shannon for
the crown and Colby Barlocker is one of two freshman sensations
ranked at this weight.
119 Pounds
1. Kolby Bradley—Springville
2. Paul Johnson—Lone Peak
3. Jake Morrill—Mountain Crest
4. Matt Spencer—Lehi
5. Marty Rubacalba—Snow Canyon
6. Nick Flores—Layton
7. Bryson Foy—Altamont
8. Jeremy Stephenson—Wayne
Notes: Kolby Bradley fought off pneumonia and won his third state
title. Junior Paul Johnson held off determined Nick Flores of Layton
to win his second state title. Jake Morrill beat Matt Spencer but
fell short losing to Bradley. Marty Rubacalba beat Flores at Layton
but lost to Paraso and ends up at #5. Bryson Foy is another freshman
superstar deserving of a ranking as he knocked off veteran Jeremy
Stephenson of Wayne to win the 1-A crown.
125 Pounds
1. Shay Warren—Weber
2. Taira Abe--Viewmont
3. Riley Adamson—Bingham
4. Aaron Butler—Monticello
5. Casey Pettus—Hurricane
6. Logan Wilson—Springville
7. Jarrett Morrill—Mountain Crest
8. Creedon Merkley—Uintah
Notes: Shay Warren delivers fourth state title and ends up on top
but had to fight hard to win against Taira Abe of Viewmont. Riley
Adamson of Bingham slipped up at region and was forced to meet Warren
in the quarterfinals but this Reno TOC third place finisher ended
up third. Aaron Butler of Monticello won another state title and
a well deserved OW award in the 1-A tournament. Casey Pettus went
back to back in 3-A and Logan Wilson, after two close calls, got
his state crown in 4-A by beating Jarrett Morrill of Mountain Crest.
Creedon Merkley of Uintah gave Pettus a good go thus earned a spot
in the Super Rankings.
130 Pounds
1. Casey Smith—Wasatch
2. Mitch Moss—Bingham
3. Mason Stott—Millard
4. Blake Mangum—Lone Peak
5. Aaron Ross—Weber
6. Hayden Petersen—Springville
7. Broc Prince—Hurricane
8. Marcus Mayeda—West
Notes: Very, very good and deep weight class. I do need to mention
wrestlers like Colten Miles (Altamont) and Cam Phillips (Lehi) along
with Brighton’s Jaes Jones and West Jordan’s Chase Burns
as wrestlers that didn’t make it in the Top 8 but have good
arguments to be there. Smith showed that he was the best with a
consistent year and top finish in 3-A after three finishes in the
runner-up position. Mitch Moss won a tough 5-A division by beating
Blake Mangum of Lone Peak, who put together a great tournament and
knocked off Weber’s Aaron Ross. Moss gets the nod over Mason
Stott, a two-timer out of Millard thanks to a head to head win at
Layton. Both Marcus Mayeda and Cam Phillips lost to Springville’s
Hayden Petersen but I gave the Mayeda the nod in the Super Rankings
based on his finish from last season where he finished fourth and
Phillips sixth in the same weight class. This was the deepest and
best overall weight class in the state in my opinion.
135 Pounds:
1. Matt Brown—Cyprus
2. Blake Griffiths—Bingham
3. Josh Baker—Davis
4. Ky Lucero—Brighton
5. Bo Beckman—Pleasant Grove
6. Shane Bonner—Wasatch
7. Jacob Rawle—Springville
8. Matt McDonald—Pine View
Notes: This was a tough one to rank—not sure what to do with
the Ky Lucero situation. I guess I have to give him the benefit
of the doubt and say he was unable to go medically which led him
to place sixth. Still, the top three definitely deserve to be ahead
of him. Blake Griffiths beat him in the semi-finals, Josh Baker
took second and beat Lucero at the 5-A duals and the top man Matt
Brown won his second state title and went undefeated. So I put Lucero
in the fourth position based on his overall success this year. Bo
Beckman finished in third in 5-A but placed ahead of Shane Bonner
and Matt McDonald at the Rumble. Jacob Rawle, who placed 8th at
Reno finishes sandwiched between these 3-A wrestlers.
140 Pounds:
1. Jason Chamberlain—Springville
2. Sean Porter—Davis
3. Luke Rasmussen—Alta
4. Wayndon Veater—Weber
5. Chase Stilson—Lone Peak
6. Dustin Peterson—Delta
7. Quincy Thatcher—Millard
8. Cody Wall—South Summit
Notes: Jason Chamberlain is the man here with three wins over four-time
5-A champ Sean Porter. Luke Rasmussen had an impressive year but
came up short against Porter. Wayndon Veater put together a great
state tournament and finished third in the tough 5-A division, beating
Chase Stilson of Lone Peak. Stilson gets the nod over Delta’s
Dustin Peterson and Quincy Thatcher. Stilson placed at the Rumble
and owns two victories over wrestlers that beat Peterson. He also
beat Thatcher head to head at Viewmont. Cody Wall, the runner-up
in 2-A, gets the spot at #8 as he gave Thatcher a great match and
was a state champ last year.
145 Pounds
1. Jake Salazar—Wasatch
2. K.C. Nate—Brighton
3. Zeke Smethhurst—Mountain Crest
4. Kyle Tuttle—Millard
5. Gavin Johnson—Box Elder
6. Skyler Korth—Box Elder
7. Logan Hubbard—Weber
8. Zane Mendenhall—Lone Peak
Notes: Jake Salazar and Kyle Tuttle won their second straight titles.
Zeke Smethurst held off Gavin Johnson of Box Elder to win the 4-A
crown. Yes, that’s not a typo, there are two Box Elder men
in the Super Rankings. Johnson was the JV wrestler for Box Elder
but beat his own varsity wrestler Skyler Korth at region and state
and then lost a classic to Smethurst. K.C. Nate probably gave Salazar
his best match inside the state. Logan Hubbard placed second in
state in 5-A with Zane Mendenhall third. Very deep weight, especially
competitive in 5-A.
152 Pounds:
1. Ethen Lofthouse—Mountain Crest
2. Lew Woolsey—Weber
3. Justin Curtice—Uintah
4. Braydon Petersen—Bear River
5. Cody Maxfield—Delta
6. Bryce Fisher—Altamont
7. Skyler Porter—Wasatch
8. David Sorenson—Spanish Fork
Notes: Who was the last wrestler to go the distance with Ethen
Lofthouse—it just might be David Sorenson of Spanish Fork,
unless somebody down in the Pine View tourney did. Lofthouse was
very impressive with three wins and one technical fall to take state
in 4-A. Very good weight in 3-A as Justin Curtice of Uintah won
in a great match over Braydon Petersen of Bear River. Cody Maxfield
was third. Between Maxfield and Wasatch’s Skyler Porter is
Bryce Fisher, the 1-A champ from Altamont who proved his mettle
losing a close one to #2 Lew Woolsey in the All-Star dual and by
placing fifth in the Rumble.
160 Pounds:
1. Ethan Smith—Wasatch
2. Chris Moat—Layton
3. Colby Kearl—Box Elder
4. David Ojuka—Provo
5. Scott Whitaker—Millard
6. Kade Hall—Weber
7. Grant Gagon—Pleasant Grove
8. Tanner Bowman—East
Notes: Ethan Smith and Chris Moat head this class of 160 pounders
while 4-A finalists Colby Kearl and David Ojuka hold down spots
#3 and #4. Scott Whitaker of Millard won 2-A in convincing fashion
but was injured when the Eagles traveled to Viewmont. Ojuka lost
four matches on the season and a heartbreaker to Kearl in the finals.
Kade Hall of Weber was solid as was Grant Gagon of Pleasant Grove.
Tanner Bowman of East also lost just four matches and placed third
in 4-A.
171 Pounds:
1. Wade Eldredge—Millard
2. Cole Schafer—Brighton
3. Riley Yeates—Box Elder
4. Mitch Sanderson—Pleasant Grove
5. Scotty Milne—Logan
6. Jared Ruppe--Uintah
7. Sam Graham—Viewmont
8. Andrew Fallon—Bountiful
Notes: Okay, this is the first weight where I didn’t think
there was a clear #1. Most people would ask, “Wade Eldredge
is not the clear #1, are you smoking banana peels Preece?”
Well, Cole Shafer did pin Mitch Sanderson to win the 5-A title.
Eldredge did beat Sanderson—twice—but not like that.
Both Eldredge and Sanderson ventured down to 160 where Sanderson
did beat Smith but Eldredge lost to him. Shafer’s only losses
are to out-of-state competiton including Shane Onufer of Auburn,
WA. Both him and Eldredge wrestled Onufer at the Rumble and actually
Shafer wrestled him closer, but both admittedly were blown out by
this national superstar. But Eldredge has won three titles and is
the senior so I will go with him #1, but I did hesitate a lot on
this one. Scotty Milne comes in #5 thanks to a great win over Uintah
stud Jared Ruppe. Sam Graham of Viewmont (third in 5-A) and Bountiful’s
Andrew Fallon check in at #7 and #8 and a great effort by Riley
Yeates at state gets the Box Elder man the #3 spot. He lost to Shafer
by just one point. I was even tempted to put him #1 as a two-time
state champion, but since due to his injury and an early one-point
loss to Shafer, Yeates ends up #3.
189 Pounds:
1. Adam Fager—Layton
2. TJ Robins—Millard
3. Dustin Martin—Weber
4. Taylor Tate--Highland
5. Nate Carter—Dixie
6. Shoat Roath—North Summit
7. Glenn Woods—Duchesne
8. Danny Hansen—North Sanpete
Notes: Great wrestlers in this weight, especially in the top three
spots. Davis stud Austin Taylor was upset twice at state and actually
beat some of these top men including Nate Carter, Adam Fager, and
Dustin Martin. Fager beat Robins in the All-Star dual but everybody
in this state would love to see a rematch. Martin of Weber is very
capable and earns the #3 spot thanks to a win over #4 Taylor Tate
at Richardson. Carter held of North Sanpete’s Danny Hansen
for the 3-A crown. Sandwiched between these wrestlers is 2-A runner-up
Shoat Roath, who shocked Robins earlier in the season, and Glenn
Woods, the 1-A state champ who I believe won his third state title.
215 Pounds
1. Dylan Clark—North Sanpete
2. David Williams--Copper Hills
3. Mike Baker—Northridge
4. Chad Satterfield—Gunnison
5. James Geloff—Manti
6. Ethan Jones—Cyprus
7—Tonga Toko--Bountiful
8—Dillon Shail—Murray
Notes: Very impressed with the small school studs in this weight
class and indeed Dylan Clark deserves to be #1. His pin in the final
helped deliver the second place trophy to North Sanpete. Chad Satterfield
and James Geloff hooked up in a classic for the 2-A crown with Satterfield
winning in OT. Geloff was an All-Star winner over #8 Dillon Shail,
who I kept in the rankings despite a third place finish at state,
because of his consistency. At #2 and #3 are 5-A finalists David
Williams and Mike Baker while Tonga Toko of Bountiful just short
in his match with Ethan Jones of Cyprus, the winner in 4-A title
who checks in at #6.
285 Pounds:
1. Jaden Briskey—Weber
2. JC Oram—Fremont
3. Riggin Holmgren—Box Elder
4. Matt Fairbrother—Murray
5. Brian Cates—Enterprise
6. Curt Houghton—North Sanpete
7. Jason Busenbark—Union
8. Justin Blackmore—West Jordan
Notes: Jaden Briskey of Weber held off JC Oram of Fremont to win
the 5-A title. Box Elder’s Riggin Holmgren avenged his loss
to Murray’s Matt Fairbrother to win the 4-A crown. Brian Cates
was extremely impressive winning the 2-A title for Enterprise. Curt
Hougton of North Sanpete beat Jason Busenbark of Union in the semi-finals
and then went on to win the 3-A crown. Justin Blackmore of West
Jordan placed third in 5-A.
